What counts as a real preserved flower?

A real preserved flower contains botanical tissue that originally grew as part of a plant. The flower may later be dehydrated, stabilized with glycols or another solution, dyed, dried under controlled conditions or protected inside a display. Treatment changes the material, but it does not turn the original botanical tissue into plastic or silk.

The important distinction is between origin and condition:

  • Origin: the main floral material began as a real flower or foliage.
  • Condition: it is cut, treated and no longer living or growing.
  • Appearance: color and texture may be natural, altered or supplemented.

How commercial preservation can work

The following sequence describes common commercial approaches at a high level. It is not a statement that every FLOWEROF product follows every step.

1. Select and harvest suitable material

Processors begin with real flowers or foliage selected at an appropriate stage and condition. Damaged or heavily wilted material cannot be made perfect simply by preservation. Species, petal structure, stem condition and intended result affect which process is suitable.

2. Remove or displace plant water

Some commercial methods dehydrate the material before stabilization. Other methods draw a solution through the vascular system so that part of the water in plant tissue is replaced. A United States International Trade Commission industry report describes commercial preserved flowers being placed in glycerin-and-water solutions, sometimes with dye, followed by controlled drying. This is one documented industrial method, not a universal formula.

3. Introduce a stabilizing solution when appropriate

Glycerin and other glycols have low volatility and can help some plant material remain pliable by replacing water that would otherwise evaporate. However, plant response differs. Mississippi State University Extension explains that glycerin is particularly useful for mature foliage and warns that soft flower-petal tissue may not hold up as well through simple uptake.

This is why “glycerin preserved” should not be assumed for every rose, hydrangea, sunflower or mixed arrangement. Commercial flower processors may use proprietary multi-stage treatments designed for particular species.

4. Adjust or restore color

Preservation can alter natural pigments. Colorants may be included in a stabilizing solution or applied in another stage to restore color or create shades not found naturally, such as some blue, black or rainbow effects. A real flower can therefore have a processed color.

Color does not prove whether a flower is real or artificial. Ask whether the exact product uses real botanical material and whether its color is natural, enhanced or dyed when that distinction matters.

5. Dry, condition or freeze-dry

Controlled drying may remove remaining moisture after chemical stabilization. Freeze-drying is another professional preservation route. University of Missouri Extension explains that freeze-drying places flowers in a refrigerated chamber, lowers them below freezing and uses a vacuum so frozen moisture sublimates. It requires specialized equipment and takes several days.

6. Inspect and assemble

After treatment, suitable materials may be graded, trimmed and arranged in a box, frame, bouquet or other indoor display. Adhesives, wire, foam, moss, fabric, acrylic or other non-botanical components may be present even when the flowers themselves are real.

A truthful product description should separate the botanical material from the container and accessories instead of describing the entire object simply as “natural.”

How drying methods differ from commercial stabilization

Royal Horticultural Society guidance describes air drying, silica gel, glycerin for suitable foliage and pressing as distinct methods. Air drying removes moisture with ventilation. Silica gel surrounds flower heads and absorbs moisture while supporting their form. Pressing flattens flowers between absorbent materials.

These methods can all preserve a botanical object in the broad sense, but they do not create identical texture, depth or appearance. A seller should not use “preserved” to hide whether an item is brittle air-dried material, soft stabilized foliage, a pressed composition or a resin object.

Are preserved flowers still alive?

No. A preserved flower is cut and no longer growing, rooting, photosynthesizing as a complete living plant or producing new blooms. It should not be watered or placed in soil. The goal is to retain selected visual and tactile qualities of botanical material after cutting.

“Fresh-looking” is an appearance description. It should not be interpreted as living, freshly cut or biologically unchanged.

Are preserved flowers dyed?

Some are. Dye can restore color lost during treatment, improve consistency or create a non-natural palette. Other products may retain more of their original color. The answer depends on the exact material and supplier.

Dyed material can still be a real flower. It may also transfer color when exposed to humidity or direct contact. Florever's care guidance warns that preserved colors may fade or run in sunlight and humidity and may transfer to fabric. This supports cautious handling, but it does not prove that every FLOWEROF product uses Florever material.

Do preserved flowers keep their scent?

Do not assume they retain the natural fragrance of fresh flowers. Dehydration, solvent exposure, stabilization and time can reduce or change scent, while some finished products may contain added fragrance. FLOWEROF should describe scent only when the exact SKU has been checked.

A lack of fragrance does not mean the flower is artificial, and a strong fragrance does not prove that it is natural.

Are preserved flowers safe or hypoallergenic?

There is no evidence-based reason to label every preserved flower hypoallergenic, non-toxic, pet-safe, edible or suitable for direct skin contact. Treatments, dyes, adhesives, dust, residual pollen and display materials vary.

  • Do not eat preserved flowers or use them as cake decorations unless a specific food-use product is documented.
  • Keep the arrangement away from young children and pets when the material information is incomplete.
